ABOUT THE DUO
Gabriele di Franco and Francesco Negro are a duo of composers and musicians originally from Puglia (Italy). Their musical history is a fusion of two distinct paths: while Gabriele spent over a decade abroad and currently lives in Belgium, Francesco chose to root his artistic path in their homeland. Their collaboration was born from the desire to explore the blending between the acoustic timbres of the piano with the sounds of a semi-acoustic guitar, which often drifts into totally electronic sounds. In 2022 they released their first album Synolon (Workin’ Label 22 – IT), in which they channeled their musical research into writing strongly composed music, but which often opened up to moments of free improvisations. “Synolon” sees them on an extensive tour between Italy, Belgium, and Germany, and “Acqua“, the album’s opening track, was awarded at the 1st Ise-Shima International Popular Music Composition Competition in Japan. August 2023 sees them return to the studio, ready to create their second recording work entitled “Cantabile“.
ABOUT CANTABILE
Cantabile is the second album by the Italian-Belgian duo of Gabriele di Franco and Francesco Negro. Cantabile is a quiet journey that continues the exploration begun on their first album (Synolon), but greatly accentuates Gabriele and Francesco’s passion for melody and lyricism. Indeed, it is no coincidence that the album’s only guest is the Spanish singer and composer Vanesa Gil Diaz, who joins the duo on two splendid compositions ‘At The Border’ and ‘Dopo Tutto’. But the singability element remains strong throughout the album. Acoustic piano timbres mingle with the sounds of a semi-acoustic guitar that modulates to pure electronics. This musical research has led Gabriele and Francesco to explore new timbre combinations, generating a sound that, although strongly rooted in jazz, is not afraid to steal sounds and shapes from improvised music, electronics, and pop.

MUSIC MAP – Review for Synolon // di Franco, Negro
So happy to share with you a wonderful review by Piergiuseppe Lippolis on Music Map.
Without ever resorting to virtuosity for its own sake, the two musicians have created a jewel at the compositional level, as demonstrated by the peaceful and wise coexistence of acoustic textures, modern embroidery and electronic inserts, whose jazz/folk afflatus integrates perfectly with the parentheses in which the purest improvisation dominates the scene.
Along the way, “Synolon” always seems to be in focus and has no moments of difficulty, from “Acqua” to “Last Song”, confirming the quality, depth and harmony of the two artists from Puglia.

SYNOLON – the new album in duo with Francesco Negro
🇬🇧 Friday 25 March sees the release of “Synolon”, the new recording project by two acclaimed musicians and composers from Puglia, Gabriele di Franco and Francesco Negro, which will be published in the Jazz & Contemporary catalogue of the Workin’ Label label and distributed by I.R.D. International Records Distribution.
At a time when the languages of music are becoming confused, the two musicians have created “Synolon”, which from the Greek σύνολον, means “everything”. A project that unites the musical worlds they love: songs, free impro, classical music and jazz, and with which they have succeeded in representing their different souls. The album contains nine original compositions, with the exception of Ambrogio Sparagna’s “Sogna o fiore mio”, with an original arrangement by the duo.
Sophisticated acoustic sounds mingle with electronic and modern sounds; jazz/folk accompaniments lead to moments of pure improvisation.
The titles of the tracks are largely inspired by the natural elements, Air, Water, Earth; Nebbiolina and Oltre are two instant compositions with which the musicians questioned the difference between composing and improvising. To compose you have all the time in the world at your disposal, to improvise, on the other hand, you photograph a specific instant in a journey through the unknown, a photo of what has been and will never be repeated twice in the same way.The release of the album will be followed by the video clip of the opening track ‘Acqua’ made by Studio Sciolto, which is due for release on 1 April.

Venerdì 25 marzo esce “Synolon”, il nuovo progetto discografico di due apprezzati musicisti e compositori pugliesi, Gabriele di Franco e Francesco Negro, che sarà pubblicato nel catalogo Jazz & Contemporary dell’etichetta Workin’ Label e distribuito da I.R.D. International Records Distribution.
In un momento in cui i linguaggi della musica si confondono, i due musicisti creano “Synolon”, che dal greco σύνολον, significa «tutto». Un progetto che unisce, appunto, i mondi musicali che amano: le songs, la free impro, la musica classica e il jazz e con il quale sono riusciti a rappresentare le loro diverse anime. L’album contiene 9 composizioni originali, ad eccezione di “Sogna o fiore mio” di Ambrogio Sparagna, proposta in un arrangiamento originale del duo.
Ricercate sonorità acustiche che si confondono ai suoni elettronici e moderni; accompagnamenti jazz/folk che sfociano in momenti di improvvisazione pura.
I titoli delle tracce sono in gran parte ispirati dagli elementi naturali, Aria, Acqua, Terra; Nebbiolina e Oltre sono due composizioni istantanee con le quali i musicisti si sono interrogati sulla differenza fra comporre e improvvisare. Per comporre si ha tutto il tempo del mondo a disposizione, per improvvisare, invece, si fotografa uno specifico istante in un viaggio attraverso l’ignoto, una foto di ciò che è stato e che non si ripeterà mai due volte nello stesso modo.L’uscita del disco sarà seguita dal videoclip della traccia di apertura “Acqua” realizzato da Studio Sciolto, la cui pubblicazione è attesa il 1° aprile.

Jazz Composition and Arranging – Gabriele di Franco e Francesco Negro
Domenica 3 febbraio alle ore 15:30 partirà il nuovo Corso di Composizione Jazz presso l’Associazione Culturale Jazz Bud Powell di Maglie a cura di Gabriele di Franco e Francesco Negro. Il corso prevede più di 30 ore di lezione in cui saranno affrontati i seguenti argomenti:
- Armonia;
- Analisi;
- Strumentazione e orchestrazione;
- Composizione
L’obiettivo del corso è quello di imparare le tecniche di orchestrazione, composizione ed arrangiamento di base per poter scrivere musica per vari organici. Le lezioni si struttureranno secondo il seguente calendario nella fascia oraria 15:30 – 18:30: Febbraio: 3, 17 Marzo: 17, 31 Aprile: 14, 28 Maggio: 12, 26 Giugno: 9, 23 Luglio: 14 Per poter partecipare al corso bisogna avere i seguenti requisiti:
- Conoscenza delle scale maggiori, minori e i modi;
- Saper armonizzare le scale maggiori e minori;
- Conoscenza degli intervalli semplici e composti;
- Conoscenza di un software di scrittura musicale (Musescore, Sibelius, Finale…)

Gabriele di Franco – bud powell jazz orchestra © Federico Rollo “La scrittura di Gabriele Di Franco è costruita intorno ai rocciosi segmenti del passato, ma guarda con occhio vigile e purpureo verso l’irrequietezza del free jazz, dell’avanguardia europea, dove il tenore della guest Marcello Allulli ne declina il verbo, con passaggi ben coagulati dall’uno all’altro emisfero (“Ninja”).
” Aspetta” è dominata dal quel soave senso di irrequietezza costruito intorno allo stop and go e a un ritmo con la cadenza di una marcia bandistica avvolta da mestizia: un lirismo che incontra la ballad rock sottolineata dal torrenziale assolo di Giancarlo Del Vitto che getta benzina sul fuoco con la sua chitarra elettrica.”
